August 6 Meeting Announcement
Microsoft Windows 98 and Communications Bandwidth

Windows 98 has shipped, and it's time to leave all of the generalities behind and begin concentrating on those tips and tricks that will let us take full advantage of this new version. We'll have Jan Roycroft of Microsoft at our August meeting to tell us some of the secret, behind-the-scenes information about this new version of the favorite operating system of most DVPC members. Learn how to make Windows 98 work the way you want it to work - come to the August meeting and get the real inside scoop! Amaze your friends, neighbors, and relatives! They will gasp with astonishment at your technical prowess! You, too, will become a Windows 98 guru!
Then, DVPC's own Charlie Crothers (travel schedule willing) will tell us all about communications bandwidth and how to maximize and get the most throughput from the alternative communications technologies that are available today: dial-up using POTS (the Plain Old Telephone System), ISDN, DSL, cable modem, satellite, and even more.
DVPC meetings are held in the lobby conference room in Building B at the Bank of America Technology Center office complex in Concord, located near the northeast corner of Clayton Road at Galindo (see the Map to Monthly Meetings on page 14). Please use the main entrance of the building, which is in the center of the front of the building that faces Clayton road.
Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and the meeting starts at 7:00 p.m. The New User's SIG has their meeting from 6:30 to 7:00. We'll also have the Networking Table from 6:30 to 7:00; if you have something to sell or trade, need technical help, or just want to exchange views, visit the Networking Table. Also, as usual, we'll have library disks and those great DVPC mugs (version 2) for sale, SIG news, random access, and some of our usual great door prizes. See you at the meeting!

Hot August Nights - Hopefully! Our August meeting should be held no matter what the outside temperature is! In August, Microsoft is coming to do a special presentation on Windows 98. Not the usual introductory stuff, but instead insider tips and tricks for getting the most out of Windows 98. The things you can show and use to impress your friends.
Our own Charlie Crothers is also set to do a presentation on Windows connectivity (his work schedule permitting) which should be very interesting and informative. Lastly, we hope to begin building our DVPC computer. I plan to pick up some of the components we need and we can start that project.
As I write this, we are still looking for a new host with a home for our Internet SIG - any volunteers????? Craig Peterson has volunteered to be SIG leader.
I also wish to start a Genealogy SIG and am looking for a volunteer to host that SIG's meetings as well.
