September 6, 2001 Meeting Announcement
Jim Espinsoa: All About the Dot-Coms and the Dot-Gones

The September 6th DVPC meeting is going to be a real treat. Jim Espinosa, a member of DVPC (and a member of the Board of Directors) a few years back before he moved to join HotMail, is now with Akamba. Jim will talk about HotMail, the industry, and lots more about the Internet, the dot-coms, and the dot-gones. His discussion about HotMail should be of particular interest; this is the leading free Web-based email service, and it also has the reputation of being the source of much of the spam email that we all receive. Jim's current employer, Akamba, is itself a dot-com hardware company producing an HTTP Server Appliance-On-a-Card for large web sites, and we'll hear about it and its products as well.
DVPC meetings are held in the lobby conference room in Building B at the Bank of America Technology Center office complex in Concord, located near the northeast corner of Clayton Road at Galindo (see the Map to Monthly Meetings on page 15). Please use the main entrance of the building, which is in the center of the front of the building that faces Clayton road. Doors open at 6:00 p.m. and the meeting starts at 7:00 p.m.
The New Users SIG holds its meetings at 6:30 p.m. prior to the regular DVPC monthly meeting on the first Thursday of each month at Bank of America building B. We discuss whatever is confusing or puzzling new PC users. If you are a new user of PCs who would like to meet with other new users -- and some experienced users who can answer your questions as well -- then join us at the New Users SIG meetings at 6:30 p.m. prior to each DVPC monthly meeting.
We'll also have the Networking Table from 6:30 to 7:00; if you have something to sell or trade, need technical help, or just want to exchange views, visit the Networking Table. We will have one of our pre-meeting games, with a great prize for the winner! Also, as usual, we'll have library disks and those great DVPC mugs (version 2) for sale, SIG news, and some of our usual great door prizes.
On page 3 of this issue of
Diablo Blue you'll find a survey that you can cut out, fill in, and either bring with you to the September meeting or mail to our P.O. Box address which you'll find on the  back page of this issue. Be sure to complete and return your survey!
See you at the September meeting!

President's Corner
by Alan Mildwurm

I am writing this shortly after my family's return from vacation (my return too, since they let me accompany them). If you have never been to Catalina Island, which is one of the Channel Islands some 22 miles west of Long Beach, it is definitely a very nice trip. Don't miss the submarine tour of all the fishies! Having been back for a few days I am now ready for another vacation. What a pile-up!
This month Jim Espinosa --
DVPC's former Vice President -- will speak about his experiences at HotMail, his new employer Akamba, and all things dot-com. I am also working on a second speaker who, as yet, has not confirmed.
PLEASE fill out the meeting survey that's on page 3 of this month's issue of Diablo Blue. We would appreciate some feedback on what you want us to focus on for our future meetings.
See you at the September meeting!

You Asked for It!

We've been asked to make Diablo Blue available in Adobe Acrobat format, so it can be read as a unit. Well, here it is folks! It's a huge file to download (as PDF files often are), 574 KB, but if you have the bandwidth, or the time, go for it! You'll need Adobe Acrobat, and/or the Acrobat plug-in for your browser, to be able to read this PDF document file.

Ready? Click HERE for this month's download.
