Ezonics EZPHONE CAM Review  by Alan Mildwurm, DVPC

In our house video conferencing is a given. Jess is at Davis, other friends and relatives are scattered about and it's cheaper to videoconference than letting your fingers do the walking (it's also more fun). I have been hauling around an old Ezonics camera to my classes for years (where I demo videoconferencing) and it has always worked flawlessly. So with my new computer, I decided I needed a new camera. I saw this one at Comdex and it looked very cool and has a great feature set.
The camera itself looks like a cell phone. It has an audible ring and flashing "antenna" that signals chat requests. It has also features a single button response and a still snapshot button together with adjustable focus and a built-in mike. The software controls shutter, video mode and contrast for the 320,000-pixel CMOS device that is 24bit at 30fps. I also like the fact that it is a USB device and therefore installs quickly and easily. I have been unable to get their video chat software to work because it requires a static ip address for their servers. (I need to take this to the office and try it on the DSL line where I have a static ip). I also suspect the proxy server here at home is giving me some grief. Also included is software to send video-email and capture both still and video images. Since a picture is worth 10,000 words, I will bring the camera to our next meeting and do a short demo!

In keeping with this spirit and in an effort to help DVPC reduce overhead costs, I say "Nay" to a written newsletter. Give it to me electronically, I want to get my copy of DVPC's Diablo Blue off the Web. (I can always print it out on blue paper and don't even have to admit that I did!)"
