July, 2001 Announcement
There Won't be a July Meeting!

Because our July meeting would be on the 5th, and the 4th is the Independence Day holiday, there will be no DVPC meeting in July. We will have our next meeting in August, so we'll see you then. Look for the meeting announcement in the August issue of Diablo Blue and on the DVPC web site, www.dvpc.org.
For those who weren't able to attend the June meeting, you missed two excellent presentations by Microsoft on Office XP and by Aladdin on StuffIt and their other utility software. The Microsoft presentation followed the introduction of Office XP by exactly one week. I was able to attend the presentation at the Imax theatre at the Sony Metreon in San Francisco. I purchased an upgrade to Office XP (and took advantage of the $100 rebate I got for attending the presentation) as a result of seeing the demonstration. Office XP turns out to have dozens of small and large convenience features that make using it a real pleasure. For example, in Outlook when you return to a folder it remembers which message you were last looking at and places the cursor there. Publisher (which I use for this newsletter) saves files that are about 60% smaller than Publisher 2000. If you've been sitting on the fence about upgrading, take another look at Office XP.
DVPC meetings are held in the lobby conference room in Building B at the Bank of America Technology Center office complex in Concord, located near the northeast corner of Clayton Road at Galindo (see the Map to Monthly Meetings on page 15). Please use the main entrance of the building, which is in the center of the front of the building that faces Clayton road. Doors open at 6:00 p.m. and the meeting starts at 7:00 p.m.
The New Users SIG holds its meetings at 6:30 p.m. prior to the regular DVPC monthly meeting on the first Thursday of each month at Bank of America building B. We discuss whatever is confusing or puzzling new PC users. If you are a new user of PCs who would like to meet with other new users -- and some experienced users who can answer your questions as well -- then join us at the New Users SIG meetings at 6:30 p.m. prior to each DVPC monthly meeting.
We'll also have the Networking Table from 6:30 to 7:00; if you have something to sell or trade, need technical help, or just want to exchange views, visit the Networking Table. We will have one of our pre-meeting games, with a great prize for the winner! Also, as usual, we'll have library disks and those great DVPC mugs (version 2) for sale, SIG news, and some of our usual great door prizes.
See you at the August meeting, and have a great 4th of July holiday in the meantime!

WARNING! Got your attention? Just wanted to reiterate that due to the proximity of the 4th of July holiday to our monthly meeting, we decided to cancel the July meeting. But coming in August we will resume with a presentation of Director Favorites. I also will have a very special raffle/auction prize for our August meeting- something very special. In Sept, MGI is slated to demonstrate some new software and Microsoft will present WINDOWS XP probably in November. Have a safe and sane 4th!

You Asked for It!

We've been asked to make Diablo Blue available in Adobe Acrobat format, so it can be read as a unit. Well, here it is folks! It's a huge file to download (as PDF files often are), 572K, but if you have the bandwidth, or the time, go for it! You'll need Adobe Acrobat, and/or the Acrobat plug-in for your browser, to be able to read this PDF document file.

Ready? Click HERE for this month's download.
