October 5, 2000 Meeting Announcement Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition
The latest version of Windows is here -- Windows Me, Windows Millennium Edition. Microsoft will be at our October meeting to show us exactly what Windows Me can do, what users it's designed for, and whether you should plan on upgrading or not. Several features in Windows Me will contribute to a healthier PC. Fast Boot, when used with optimized hardware, gets the PC up and running in 30 seconds or less. System File Protection prevents a user from overwriting critical system files. Smart Menus automatically displays a user's favorites while hiding items not regularly accessed. When new hardware is installed, Windows Me checks the accompanying driver to verify that it is authentic, current, and safe. Come to learn more! DVPC meetings are held in the lobby conference room in Building B at the Bank of America Technology Center office complex in Concord, located near the northeast corner of Clayton Road at Galindo (see the Map to Monthly Meetings on page 15). Please use the main entrance of the building, which is in the center of the front of the building that faces Clayton road. Doors open at 6:00 p.m. and the meeting starts at 7:00 p.m. We will have the next installment of PC 101, our New Users SIG class run by Craig Peterson on how to use the computer, at 6:15 p.m. We will be looking at the next chapter of our textbook "Teach Yourself Computers and the Internet Visually". The book can be ordered by contacting Craig Peterson (compmail@pacbell.net). The classes are open to all members. We'll also have the Networking Table from 6:30 to 7:00; if you have something to sell or trade, need technical help, or just want to exchange views, visit the Networking Table. We may have one of our ever-popular mini-auctions with great products, so bring your checkbooks and cash! Also, as usual, we'll have library disks and those great DVPC mugs (version 2) for sale, SIG news, random access, and some of our usual great door prizes. See you at the meeting!

Not to be outdone by some of the new combinations of HiTec, my latest "I've Got To Try This". Example, being the newer uses of FireWire. Note: Originally a Apple development, but they sat on their hands so long that others in the trades came up with their own standard, IEEE1394 to be know under several trade names, as Sony's iLink, and Adaptec's HotConnect, etc. 1. Iomega's 250 Zip that has an adapter that goes from the USB Zip 250 to a FireWire port. This one is easy to hook up, and I had no trouble to make it go.

You Asked
for It!
We've been asked to make Diablo
Blue available in Adobe Acrobat format, so it can be read as a unit. Well, here
it is folks! It's a huge file to download (as PDF files often are), 642K, but if
you have the bandwidth, or the time, go for it! You'll need Adobe
Acrobat, and/or the Acrobat plug-in for your browser, to be able to read
this PDF document file.
Ready? Click HERE
for this month's download.
