June 1, 2000 Meeting Announcement
Pacific Bell DSL and SOHOware

It seems that "broadband Internet access" is being discussed or advertised everywhere we turn these days. And some of our members have jumped on this bandwagon and are using either a Cable Modem or DSL. Well, for the rest of us we'll have the opportunity to hear about the DSL side of the broadband story at our June meeting! Pacific Bell will present the entire story about DSL: what it is, how it works, how it's hooked up, what the options are, where you can (and can't) get it, how to find out if you can get it, and how much it costs.
We're also going to see SOHOware's networking products, including CableFREE. CableFREE provides wireless home networking, including connecting to a DSL or Cable modem or an existing Ethernet network.

DVPC meetings are held in the lobby conference room in Building B at the Bank of America Technology Center office complex in Concord, located near the northeast corner of Clayton Road at Galindo (see the Map to Monthly Meetings on page 15). Please use the main entrance of the building, which is in the center of the front of the building that faces Clayton road.
Doors open at 6:00 p.m. and the meeting starts at 7:00 p.m. We will have the next installment of
PC 101, a class run by Craig Peterson on how to use the computer, at 6:15 p.m. This month we'll be looking at the next section of "Teach Yourself Computers and the Internet Visually". Members who would like to order the book for home study can contact Craig at the meeting or by

President's Corner

This month I am really looking forward to our presentations. We have scheduled Pacific Bell to speak about DSL and SOHOware to speak about home networking. (As of this writing, I have not yet confirmed SOHOware.) As many of you know, we recently installed DSL at our office. Previous to this installation, the five of us who needed to go online shared a single phone line. We were very much like the commercials on TV touting DSL. (The ones set in neighborhoods where neighbors are going nuts over shared cable access and shouting WEBHOG). Each of us had a small box on our desk with a red light that blinked when someone was using the one modem phone line. One of our paralegal's modem never hung up properly and she would think she was offline only to find her modem had not released the line. Anyway, we all felt our need for the modem line was greater than anyone else's -- you get the picture: WEBHOG!
I heard of a special through Pac Bell for DSL for

You Asked for It!

We've been asked to make Diablo Blue available in Adobe Acrobat format, so it can be read as a unit. Well, here it is folks! It's a huge file to download (as PDF files often are), 654K, but if you have the bandwidth, or the time, go for it! You'll need Adobe Acrobat, and/or the Acrobat plug-in for your browser, to be able to read this PDF document file.
