August 3, 2000 Meeting Announcement
Active Concepts

Our August meeting will address the topic of Internet security and privacy. Active Concepts will make a presentation on what the threats to privacy are and how we can secure our computers (and lives!) from the security threats that exist on the Internet. These threats aren't just those that the popular press has been publicizing; you'll find out what other threats you need to protect yourself from!
DVPC meetings are held in the lobby conference room in Building B at the Bank of America Technology Center office complex in Concord, located near the northeast corner of Clayton Road at Galindo (see the Map to Monthly Meetings on page 15). Please use the main entrance of the building, which is in the center of the front of the building that faces Clayton road.
Doors open at 6:00 p.m. and the meeting starts at 7:00 p.m. We will have the next installment of PC 101, our New Users SIG class run by Craig Peterson on how to use the computer, at 6:15 p.m. This month we'll be taking a break from our textbook  "Teach Yourself Computers and the Internet Visually". This month we will be asking the question "What do I need in a computer and where should I get it?"
The classes are open to all members.
We'll also have the Networking Table from 6:30 to 7:00; if you have something to sell or trade, need technical help, or just want to exchange views, visit the Networking Table. We may have one of our ever-popular mini-auctions with great products, so bring your checkbooks and cash! Also, as usual, we'll have library disks and those great DVPC mugs (version 2) for sale, SIG news, random access, and some of our usual great door prizes.
See you at the meeting!

This is summer isn't it? Today I think the thermometer barely hit the mid 70s. Strange! Our August presentation, though, will be hot. Active Concepts is scheduled to do a presentation on a number of Internet topics including security. This is a very interesting and relevant topic as we read about spy software tracking our every movement while on the web. (An excellent article on this topic can be found at the Gibson Research Site, www.grc.com) That old saying that just because you're paranoid doesn't mean they are not out to get you may be true! I look forward to their presentation.
Coming up in future months will be wireless home networking and (of course) Microsoft with Windows Me. As you will see elsewhere in this issue, we decided to skip Windows Night, which has traditionally been held in November. See you at the August meeting!

You Asked for It!

We've been asked to make Diablo Blue available in Adobe Acrobat format, so it can be read as a unit. Well, here it is folks! It's a huge file to download (as PDF files often are), 654K, but if you have the bandwidth, or the time, go for it! You'll need Adobe Acrobat, and/or the Acrobat plug-in for your browser, to be able to read this PDF document file.

Ready? Click HERE for this month's download.
